Get Relief from Sensitive Gums

The significance of your pearly whites is palpable! Parents of young children frequently experience a range of emotions when they see their child’s mouth. For example, some may be concerned when they notice that their child has tender or painful gums. These tender or painful gums are known as “sensitive” or “toxic” gums. Doctors refer to this condition as sensitive gum disease (also known as acute oral poliosis), and it is far more common in children than parents may realize.

Sensitive Gums

A large number of people suffer from sore or sensitive gums. You brush or floss your teeth, and notice a stinging sensation in your gums. Sometimes, sore gums also start to bleed while you brush or floss. Because the pain from swollen gums is usually not too serious and it is a common problem, many people don't pay any heed to gum pain. However, sensitive gums can be an early sign of serious gum disease. You would be glad to know that treating the problem of sensitive gums is not that difficult, specifically if you are in the early stages of sensitive gum disease.

Causes of Sensitive Gums

Sensitive gums are caused by excessive brushing, improper flossing, infection(s), or gum disease, which can all result in painful and tender gums. Other causes that are not related to your oral hygiene but can cause such a problem might include leukemia, Vitamin-K deficiency, some hormonal changes during pregnancy, and/or some blood disorders. If you find your gums to be sore or tender, don’t delay in consulting an eminent dentist. Stress is also an important cause of such a problem. Dietary deficiencies also happen to be yet another causative factor aggravating this issue.

Treatment of Sensitive Gums

  • To treat sensitive gum issues at home, you should first avoid common triggers for gum sensitivity. Some examples of these triggers include spicy foods, ice cream, mints, and mouthwash. Brushing 2 times a day with a soft-bristled brush using sensitivity toothpaste helps. Flossing 1 time a day also helps.

  • Try to keep the home environment stress-free, relaxed and happy, so that the stress levels of all family members remain controlled to not aggravate such a problem in any of the family members including children.

  • In many cases, where there is pain or tenderness in a young patient’s mouth, massaging the affected area with warm oil can provide immediate relief without drugs or surgery.

  • You can also apply an ice pack to the sore spot for fifteen minutes twice daily until the condition improves.

  • If the sensitivity persists after avoiding potential triggers and applying natural treatments, it may be time to visit the dentist for examination and possible treatment plan development.

  • A healthy, balanced diet can also provide prevention from sensitive gums. A diet rich in vitamin C & calcium can reduce the risk of such gum problems.

  • Young children also develop sensitive gums due to developmental issues such as teething or growing teeth in their mouths. While this condition does not always need treatment from a dentist; most doctors recommend regular dental checkups for young patients with sensitive gums.

Gum sensitivity can be caused by using incorrect products, wrong brushing & flossing habits, and decaying under gums can be treated; however, excessive damage done permanently due to these causes cannot be reversed. To reduce gum sensitivity, you should seek dental care to remove the source of your problem or gum recession.
