A bone biopsy is a diagnostic medical procedure in which a small sample of bone is removed for testing purposes. The bone may be removed from the patient's bone marrow, or it may be taken from a bone that is already exposed. Usually samples of bone will be taken from shin, thigh, or hip bone. The purpose of a bone biopsy is to help diagnose problems inside the bone, such as bone infections, tumors, or other abnormalities. Bone biopsies are also used to determine the cause of bone pain or to evaluate how well a bone is healing after an injury or surgery. While the most common reason for a bone biopsy is to diagnose a bone infection, the other reasons may also include the following:
To determine the cause of bone infection or pain
To diagnose any developing bone cancer or tumors
To diagnose leukemia
What To Expect With A Bone Biopsy Procedure?
Bone biopsies are generally safe and minimally invasive. The procedure is typically done as an outpatient, which means you can go home the same day and the entire procedure will take about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Before The Procedure - Preparing for a bone biopsy usually involves a simple blood test to make sure that the patient is not at risk for any complications. The patient may also be asked to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, before the procedure. The patient will be given a sedative to help them relax. The area where the bone will be removed will be numbed with a local anesthetic.
During The Procedure - The doctor will make a small cut in the skin. They will then insert a needle into the bone and remove a small sample of bone tissue. The patient may feel pressure during the procedure, but it shouldn't be painful. The sample will then be sent to a laboratory for further testing.
After The Procedure - The patient will be taken to a recovery area. The patient may have some soreness and bruising at the biopsy site which will resolve on its own within a few days. The patient can usually expect to resume their normal activities as soon as the next day. They will be monitored for any complications. The patient will also be asked to refrain from strenuous activity for a period of time to allow the area to completely heal.
Most patients can go home the same day with instructions to rest for at least 24 hours. They may have some pain and swelling at the biopsy site. These symptoms should improve within a few days.
